Rockville Centre Choral Society
RVCCS History
In
the spring of 1984 the village of Rockville Centre on Long Island welcomed a new performing
group, the Rockville Centre Choral Society. This group of adult voices from the
village and the surrounding area has been delighting audiences with a mixed
repertoire of light classics, Broadway musicals, seasonal gems and the music of
the people ever since.
Highlights of seasons past include a concert rendition of The
Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan; as well as the Chicester Psalms by
Bernstein; the Gloria in D by Vivaldi and Handel’s Messiah.
The chorus has participated in Christmas tree-lighting events; a 9/11 memorial;
and the Rockville Centre inter-faith Thanksgiving service. In
2005 the chorus participated in a very successful tsunami relief concert,
spear-headed by the then co-presidents of the choral society. The chorus also
provides extensive community service, singing for nursing homes in the area as
well as caroling at local hospitals during the Christmas season.
Our annual spring and winter concerts have been held
in Rockville Centre at the Middle School, and more recently, at St. James United
Methodist Church in Lynbrook and St. Marks Methodist Church in Rockville Centre.
Past directors have included Paul LaMedica and Ken Blue; our current director is
Jean Stevenson.
New members are accepted during the months of January
and September.
